China’s investments in education grew to almost 679 billion euro in 2020

In 2020, the total expenditure on education in China was 5301.4 billion yuan (678.7 billion euro). That is an increase of 5.65% over the previous year, recent statistics from the Chinese Ministry of Education show, according to Finn-Sino’s Chinese media partner, Rayee ACE.  

National educational funds 
National financial education funds constituted 4,289.1 billion yuan (548,6 billion euro).  

These funds include education funds arranged by general public budgets and government fund budgets, enterprise allocations in state-owned and state-controlled enterprises, school-run industries and social service income for education funds, among other.  

The investment from these funds have seen an increase of 7.10% compared to the previous year 

Educational funding at all levels 
The distribution of education funds among all levels of education was as follows: 

  • Total investment in preschool education in China: 420.3 billion yuan (53.8 billion euro), an increase of 2.39% over the previous year. 
     
  • Total investment in compulsory education in China: 2,429.5 billion yuan (310.7 billion euro), an increase of 6.55% over the previous year. 
     
  • Total investment in high school education in China: 842.8 billion yuan (107.8 billion euro), an increase of 9.14% over the previous year.  
  • Included was a total investment in secondary vocational education of 287.2 billion yuan (36.7 billion euro), an increase of 9.97% over the previous year. 
  • Total expenditure for higher education in China:  1,399.9 billion yuan (179 billion euro) , an increase of 3.99% over the previous year.  
  • Included was a total investment in general higher vocational education of 275.8 billion yuan (35.3 billion euro), an increase of 14.73% over the previous year. 
  • Total investment in other education funds in China: 209 billion yuan (26.7 billion euro), an increase of 0.09% over the previous year. 

Educational expenditures per student at all levels 

The total education expenditure per student in kindergartens, ordinary primary schools, ordinary junior high schools, ordinary high schools, secondary vocational schools, and ordinary colleges and universities nationwide in 2020 looked as follows: 

  • An average of 12,954 yuan (1,657 euro) was spent on each kindergarten student in China in 2020. That is an increase of 9.14% over the previous year. 
     
  • An average of 14,103 yuan (1,804 euro) was spent on each general primary school student in China in 2020. That is an increase of 4.43% over the previous year. 
     
  • An average of 20,342 yuan (2,602 euro) was spent on each junior high school student in China in 2020. That is an increase of 3.94% over the previous year. 
     
  • An average of 23,489 yuan (3,004 euro) was spent on each high school student in China in 2020. That is an increase of 6.10% over the previous year. 
     
  • An average of 22,568 yuan (2,887 euro) was spent on each secondary vocational school student in China in 2020. That is an increase of 6.51% over the previous year. 
     
  • An average of 37,241 yuan (4,763 euro) was spent on each student at regular colleges and universities in China. That is a decrease of 3.78% over the previous year.
